Ian Lavery

Ian Lavery Ian Lavery is 43 years of age married with two boys. He has lived in Ashington, once the largest coal mining village in Europe, all of his life. He worked at both Lynemouth and Ellington Collieries. Before being elected as a full time trade Union official of the NUM he was working on the coal face at Ellington. He was elected as Chairman of the NUM in August 2002 succeeding Arthur Scargill. [updated March 2006]

Ian Lavery was on the panel at The Great Energy Debate in March 2006 at Discovery Museum in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Ian Lavery says:

'I firmly believe that the nation's energy requirements should be served by our indigenous reserves, and I oppose the policy whereby energy of any source should be left to the vagaries of the freemarket.'
