Dr Hayley Fowler Dr Hayley Fowler

Hayley Fowler is Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Research Fellow in the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at Newcastle University, where she has worked since 2001. She is a hydro-climatologist and looks at the effects of global warming and natural climate variability on water resource system reliability, particularly floods and droughts. She has a particular interest in recent changes in extreme weather and whether they are caused by global warming. Her work has concentrated in the UK and Europe, but she has recently started work looking at the impacts of global warming on water availability in the Himalayas and the effects on glaciers.

She has published over 25 papers in international journals and conference proceedings and is Honorary Secretary of the British Hydrological Society. She leads the Newcastle involvement in several EU funded projects looking at new ways of assessing future climate change impacts, and is involved in several UK Research Council and Environment Agency funded projects, producing tools that stakeholders in the UK can use to easily assess the likelihood and size of potential climate change impacts upon their industry.

Hayley Fowler is on the panel of the Water Resources and the Future session of Development, Sustainability and Environment 3 in March 2007.

Research Interests

  • Modelling and analysis of both current and future hydrological extremes in rainfall causing droughts and floods
  • Impacts of climate variability and change on the sustainable use of water and its related activities in Europe
  • Evidence of climatic variability and change in temperature and precipitation data outside the European region, and changing trends over time
  • Accounting for uncertainty due to natural variability and error due to incomplete knowledge of future conditions
